One thing worth knowing before you need it: if your check engine light is flashing rather than steady, stop driving. That commonly means an active misfire, and in stop-and-go traffic a misfiring engine spends a long time at the temperature that destroys a catalytic converter. Running time is what matters, not how few blocks remain.
