European service schedules read mileage or time, whichever arrives first, and the time half is commonly twelve months. Oil ages entirely on its own. The additive package depletes, moisture and combustion acids accumulate, and a car driven briefly and parked gives that mixture months to sit against bearings and chain guides. Heat and humidity here accelerate every part of it. The odometer is reassuring and it is telling you very little.
What goes into the engine matters as much as when. BMW Longlife, Mercedes-Benz MB-Approval, Porsche A40 — these are tested approvals printed on the container, not marketing language. Watch for the phrase “meets or exceeds,” which is the oil company describing its own product rather than an approval anyone granted. On a shelf the two look identical. In your engine they are not.
If you keep a classic or a low-mileage collector car, tell us the year. Older European engines frequently call for specifications a current model does not, and a car being stored is better served by fresh oil before it is parked than after.
